Listening and Vocabulary

I. Vocabulary: http://www.vocabulary.com/

This website offers excellent vocabulary practice. You can create your own account – for free – and do as many exercises as you like.

II. Select the following link for a listening exercise on Development: http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/magazine/development . Go to Text and read the article (you can also listen to the audio while you read). Then go to Task and do the activity. Look up the words you do not know!

III. Select the following link for a listening exercise on Corruption: http://www.elllo.org/english/1001/1039-Aiman-Corruption.htm

  1. If you want to read and listen at the same time, select “play” under first tab (‘transcript’); if you want to listen without reading the text at the same time, select the second tab (‘audio slide show’).
  2. Select Vocabulary Quiz and then on Comprehension Quiz at the right-hand side of the text. Do the exercises.

Reading and Vocabulary

For Reading exercises you can explore the English Test Store site. Under the sections Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate Reading Tests and Advanced Reading Tests you will find lists of tests. Make your own, random selection or choose one of the direct links under Selection below. Instructions: there are 5 tot 10 questions on a particular test. After having submitted the answer, you will hear whether it is correct or not. The next question on the text will then automatically appear.

Below a selection of reading exercises from various websites. Click on the link to start the exercise.

Instructions: read the text and answer the questions. Then click on next exercise at the bottom of the page.

Instructions: Scroll down, click on start, read the passage and answer the question. After having submitted the answer, you will hear whether it is correct or not. The next question on the text will then automatically appear.

Click on level 1, then on Business and Money and then on continue. Click on start quiz. At the end of the quiz submit your scores. If you have more than 8 out of 10 questions right, do the quiz with the same subject, but now on level 2. Otherwise repeat the quiz.

Instructions: scroll down to Sublist 1- List of words. Look at the words, if you are not sure what they mean, click on definition (for fun you can also click on the word for the pronunciation if you want to adopt a West Coast Canadian accent). Then scroll up and do the exercises under Sublist 1- Group 1.

Don’t forget to make a list of all the words you look up. Use the Vocabulary Building Worksheet attached to this module and make sentences as well.​
